Experimental Fiction by Women
LIT4394.01
Course Description
Summary
Women writers are notoriously overlooked by the canon, often falling into obscurity in favor of male writers’ contributions, or only recognized under the “woman writer” category. In this 2-credit class, we will trace the lineage of women’s literary invention, including their contributions to stream of consciousness writing, the Nouveau Roman, Oulipo, and contemporary experimental fiction, and will question what makes literary experiments that of a woman writer. We will read short selections by writers such as Murasaki Shikibu, Virginia Woolf, Marguerite Duras, Anne Garréta, Toni Morrison, Leonora Carrington, Adrienne Kennedy, Anne Carson, and Karen Tei Yamashita. Students will have the option of submitting creative or critical responses to the assigned reading, and the opportunity to expand one of their responses into a longer final project.Prerequisites
Interested students should submit a writing sample via this form by November 24, 2023. Students will be notified of acceptance into this class by November 29, 2023. Students should select Ben Anastas from the faculty email on the form.
