Course Description
Summary
This course is intended for dancers, poets, writers, and anyone else interested in interdisciplinary work. Through the exploration of the works of various poets and choreographers/dance-makers, we aim to show the connections and subversions between these two fields, be they thematic, formal, historical, theoretical (and so on). We will examine work across a broad and diverse range of artists, artistic movements, periods, and approaches within dance and literature--with an interest in the experimental, innovative, and paradigm shifting.
This lab-style course will feature collaborative in-class creative practice work and analysis, such as discussing poems and doing close readings; in-class writing exercises; collaborative writing; incorporating and layering written and spoken text with movement; and the creation of improvised and set movement scores and mini-performance events, using poetry and language as a map or guide.
Students will be expected to do weekly readings and video viewings. There will be several writing and dance-making assignments due, and the focus will be on procedural and creative responses, rather than perfected or finished work. There will also be a final collaborative project required, which could take many forms dependent upon student interests and experience.
