MPF4219.01) (new course code as of 11/7/2023
Course Description
Summary
The DNA of Funk Music has its roots in Africa, which developed to fruition in the mid 60s and 70s through the music of James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Funkadelic, and others. There have been derivatives of this influence in the form of Afro-pop, Brazilian funk, Hip-Hop, and Reggaeton. The ¿ÐýÃŹÙÍø Funk Collective will investigate classic songs and compositions from that era by examining the interlocking rhythms that are the building blocks of this genre. Transcribing, arranging, and practicing rhythmic grooves will help students develop an increased understanding of rhythm while exploring and performing this syncopated music. Horn players will have an opportunity to contribute to horn arrangements. Vocalists will have an opportunity to contribute to vocal arrangements, and instrumentalists will have an opportunity to contribute to the form and structure of the music. Live performances will be scheduled during the term. The Collective will consist of Vocals (3), Guitars (2), Bass (1), Keyboard (1), Drummer (1), Percussion (1), Horns (3)...subject to change.Prerequisites
Students should be able to communicate on their instrument while learning and retaining music audibly and/or through reading a notated score. Auditions scheduled over zoom by appointment - contact mwimberly@bennington.edu.
