Course Description

Summary

This course explores the many possibilities of using a large format camera to image the world and its unique ability to render light, texture, and form with exquisite detail. Particular attention will be paid to image manipulation employing tilts and swings, light meter techniques, and using three emulsions: black and white negatives, color negatives, and color transparencies. Researching how contemporary image-makers are using the large format camera to communicate ideas rooted in both the poetic as well as the political will also be covered including Deana Lawson, Odette England, Catherine Opie, Barbara Bosworth, and An-My Lê, among others. Students will be expected to complete a series of technical assignments and a final portfolio of ten finished prints, either silver gelatin photographs or digital ink jet images, by the end of term. Cameras, tripods, and light meters, along with a limited amount of film, will be provided by the college. A Mac-compatible external hard-drive capable of storing large digital files will be required.
