Course Description
Summary
This singing ensemble will learn and sing music from the African-American tradition focusing particularly on historical songs of protest and contemporary songs of praise. The repertoire will include music from the recently premiered project: “Songs of Slavery and Emancipation (1780-1800s)” as well more contemporary spirituals and gospel music. All will be considered in the historical, spiritual and social context in which they occur. In the early 1800s, abolitionist Joseph Simpson McCarter wrote: “You could sing what would be death to speak.” Through singing his protest songs and other selected music, we will experience the power of song as it informs, enlightens and empowers us with timeless messages of freedom, equity and peace.
