Course Description

Summary

January 25, 1929 – this was not a day of any grand consequence, but as a microcosm, it takes us into more significant topics and longer timelines. What was this day like for an individual living in New York City? What difference in that day’s demands and experiences arose from the fact of this individual’s gender, race, age, heritage, and location in the city? How were these individual experiences on this one day the same or at odds with experiences fifty, one hundred, two hundred years earlier? Assignments will immerse students in entrepreneurial uses of history, such as digital collections, podcasts, and historically-themed games and reality shows. Expectations include weekly readings, assignments, discussions, impromptu presentations, and individual or collaborative projects.
