Course Description

Summary

This course is for people who are developing a choreographic voice. In this course, Parijat Desai will offer processes she is using to develop choreographic material for her project How Do I Become WE as well as for her ongoing artistic practice.  How Do I Become WE is a participatory performance ritual based on a Tamil folk narrative in which a woman keeps a story inside her, until she finally tells a wall. The storytelling/performance will be framed by an opening ritual and options for participation, including circle dance which witnesses will be invited to join. Parijat will lead Improvisational scores drawn from the HDIBW process such as “rooting and branching” and “sensing the village.” Parijat will also lead students in elements of the Tamalpa LifeArt Process® developed by Anna and Daria Halprin. She will provide prompts for movement, improvisation, drawing, and poetic writing as a means to access feelings, ideas, symbols and story held by the unconscious mind / body. Parijat will build on the Tamalpa process to facilitate development of gestural material and movement scores.
