Course Description

Summary

Many works that don’t fit neatly into the documentary/fiction binary are developed through a combination of pre-determined structure and improvisation with actors, non-actors, and even a place as collaborator. By studying methods that come mainly from everyday movement research, experimental theater, and translation we will develop movement structures, texts, and other frameworks to be used as starting points for a moving image work. We will look at the work of Ana Vaz, Los Ingrávidos, Teatro Oficina, Christopher Harris, among others and develop exercises based on the work of Pauline Oliveros, Marina Rosenfeld, and Augusto Boal. Note: This is an intensive 4-credit course, and meets for four hours, twice a week for the first seven weeks of the term.
