Doorways into Solo Practice

Course Description
Summary
How do we make a piece? What are we looking for when we are viewing dance? What is our comfort zone as performers, and are we willing to risk moving at the edge of it? This project-based course is designed for students who have prior experience with creating performative work (even a small amount!), especially in the context of using the body in motion as material whether for a dance piece or any visual art context. This class will expose students to a wide variety of approaches to creating, scoring and choreographing dance, while encouraging participants to hone and exercise their unique creativity. Participants will be expected to create work outside of class time, and to share findings and performances with the group. A basic level of comfort with incorporating somatic touch as part of the language of dance is invited for this class. Some of the themes we will move through are: *Framing the dance: what comes before and after as a performer *Working with the body as physical material as well as a body with a personal history. *Sourcing material from our own life issues, struggles and triumphs. *Experimenting with site specific work around campus *Improvising short sketches as well as building a slightly longer deliberate choreography.Corequisites
Dance or Drama Lab Assignment if students are registered for 4 or more credits in Dance.
