Course Description

Summary

In this course, students will learn tools and strategies for creating sound and music from any kind of data. The course will touch on a wide range of topics for using data sonification in sound installation, music performance and audio recording. Students will learn to design and build their own Arduino based sensors, MIDI controllers, Pure Data patches and mechanisms for combining these tools for sound generation and manipulation within a DAW. Students will experiment with large and small data sets ranging from weather related measurements to body worn physiological sensors. By the end of the course, each student will have created a new work with their own unique, self designed data sonification system. Course materials are estimated to cost $20 per student. Students should check at the College bookstore for availability of these materials.
