Course Description

Summary

The business side of music, from contracts to audio distribution platforms, is an important component of an artist’s life. Kyoko Kitamura – musician, former journalist, former executive director of the arts organization Tri-Centric Foundation – will share real life examples as well as cover various topics of interest including the effects of the pandemic, music as commodity and where it is situated within the larger ecosystem of the music industry, musician contracts, distribution platforms, acquisition of musicians’ catalogs and what that means for labels and the finance industry, technology, PR methods, and more. In-class group discussions will explore current relevant issues. These topics will have no right or wrong answers because they are happening in real time, but the course will help participants see the issues from multiple perspectives. Participants will be encouraged to think about “what’s next” for the music industry.
