Course Description

Summary

This will be an intermediate level voice class, for students interested in learning about and singing music in The Black Singing style as found in various traditions in the U.S.  The class will listen to, analyze and explore the fundamental concepts of the Black Singing Style, including aspects of rhythmic and melodic patterns, improvisation, and timbre. Students will sing selected songs from genres that incorporate this style, such as: RB, Pop, Soul, Spirituals, Blues, Jazz, and Gospel. Additionally, students will select and work on singing individual songs that incorporate the style(s). Vocal production will be discussed and group warm-ups and vocalizations will incorporate exercises to develop breath control, resonance, projection, range, color, and agility in these styles of singing. Guest artists/singers who perform in various Black Singing Style traditions will present sessions and workshops both virtually and in-person. Students are required to attend these sessions. Students will also have half-hour repertory sessions every other week with an accompanist. Students must have previous voice experience and/or study, and some music literacy.

Corequisites

Attendance and participation in Music Workshop T 6:30pm – 8:00pm.
