Movement Practice: Beginning/Intermediate Dance Technique
DAN2002.01
Course Description
Summary
This movement practice course will utilize exercises culled from various somatic practices as an entryway into exploring sensation and cultivating attention towards the vast amount of information already present in our bodies. These awarenesses will then be put to use by some sweet dance moves, repetitive technical exercises, improvisational prompts, set choreographic material and performance constructs. We will watch, listen and learn from one another and challenge ourselves by taking ourselves seriously, taking the work seriously (though not without a sense of humor), and embracing failure and vulnerability as part of the process of dancing. We will incorporate moving from different body systems (nerves, glands, bones, organs), vocalization as a movement practice, and practicing abandon and precision simultaneously, with the hopes of expanding our notion of dance “technique”. We will welcome and learn from people with various aesthetic backgrounds, abilities, ages and levels of experience. Our primary focus is on the potential of movement as an art form, a means of non-verbal communication and an expression of utopic desire.Corequisites
