Course Description
Summary
We will engage in an investigation of textual analysis for performance of Shakespeare: scansion, rhythm, sense stress, image work, phonetic phraseology, etc. We will study the structure of the verse and the elements of rhetoric as the primary source for an actor’s investigation and performance of a role. We will explore techniques for enlivening that analysis in the performer’s body. We will study how heightened language combined with personalization, characterization, and the actor-audience relationship informs the physical, vocal, emotional, and intellectual responsiveness of an actor. Recent developments in anti-black, and race/gender consciousness as regards Shakespeare will be addressed. Course content will focus on sonnets, speeches, and soliloquies.Corequisites
