Kansai Dialect and Culture
JPN4170.01
Course Description
Summary
Kansai is a bustling region of Japan on the western half of the main island of Honshu. The people of Kansai are loud and jovial, and take great pride in a special brand of humor only found in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and the surrounding area. The Japanese spoken in this region is a bit different from what you'll find in a standard textbook. Everything from casual speech to keigo has its own special twist. This class will go into the differences in language between Kansai-ben, and hyōjungo or Standard Japanese. In addition to the dialect differences, we'll talk about the history of the region, the food, and the various regional stereotypes held both by and Kansai-jin. This class will meet once a week for conversation practice and a lecture.Prerequisites
Permission of instructor. Three terms of Japanese or equivalent.
