Course System Home Terms Spring 2021 Explorations in Public History

Course Description

Summary

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of Public History, meaning history generated for wide general audiences through collaborations among community activists, historians, museum professionals, artists, preservationists, archivists, and policymakers. Public History is an umbrella for the fascinating universe of museums, landmarks, historic sites, memorials, exhibitions, reenactments, and so on. It is an especially timely moment to explore this world, given recent initiatives to "reimagine the country’s approach to monuments and memorials, to better reflect the nation’s diversity and highlight buried or marginalized stories." Assignments will immerse students in entrepreneurial uses of history, such as virtual and augmented reality, podcasts, and the newest generation of historically themed games.
