Course Description

Summary

Dance performance exists in time and space. How does our experience change when we see dance mediated by the videographer or the choreographer through a camera lens? In this course we have two simultaneous tasks: (1) to perceive and understand the point of view of the videographer/choreographer as we watch dances made for camera as well as documentary films, and 2) understand the concerns of the major figures of 20th century dance as we watch their dances on film. We will be looking at a wide variety of dance, from The Ballets Russes (1907-1929) to early Modern Dance at ¿ÐýÃŹÙÍø (1930’s) to Postmodern Dance (1960s-1970s), nationally and internationally. Students will be expected to write about what they are viewing, begin to develop a vocabulary and also develop a presentation on a contemporary choreographer they have researched and analyzed.
