Course Description

Summary

What is the materiality of sound? Do some combinations of sounds have a shape, have color? How can we identify and work with these characteristics? How does sound affect the body and brain? This is an installation class that focuses on ways of working with Sound in the context of Visual Art. You will learn all the tools necessary to create an electronic sound installation - from recording in the field, to editing in the studio, to conceptualizing and executing site specific installations. We discuss and read about historical art spaces devoted to Sound Installation such as the La Monte Young’s Dreamhouse, Michael Schumacher’s Diapason Galery, and Singhur. We will dabble in Acoustics and Psycho-Acoustics in order to better understand the ear, brain, and sound in space. We will also hold bi-weekly critiques of student works-in-progress. Open to students with zero prior knowledge of electronic music software.
