Summary

The veil, the headscarf or hijab has been a very controversial issue all over the world. It has also been the subject of many artworks produced both by veiled women themselves, or by others. Some of these art works serve and create the discourses of nationalism. colonialism, patriarchy, and Islamophobia, while others (especially those which have been created by veiled women) react to, and subvert the discourses around the veil. In this course, the students will cover some of the basic literature about the veil in identity politics, gender, sociology and art history. The students will watch documentaries, read novels and plays, look at paintings and photographs about the veil. They will also read various articles on the art works covered in the course in order to assess how the hegemonic discourses around the veil are constructed as well as confronted and challenged through the arts. In this course, the students are also expected to create their own projects about the veil.
