Course Description

Summary

Alfred Hitchcock was the greatest director of suspense films, and one of the most original and influential film directors of all time. In this class we will watch a number of HItchcock's best movies, beginning with the silent classic The Lodger and finishing at the end of his career in the 1970s, taking in classics like The Thirty-Nine Steps, Rear Window, North By Northwest and Psycho on the way. Outside readings will include source materials on which the films were based (short stories, novellas, plays) and critical essays on the individual films. There will be a final paper and several quizzes and tests.
