Course Description

Summary

This seven-week course will explore the complex issues involved in a multi-party collaborative problem-solving process. Systems analysis, conflict resolution models and negotiation strategies will all be covered as to their strategic utility in these types of complicated disputes. Students will read the AREU (Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit) report on the conflict over trans-boundary water resources in the Indus Basin between Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran. After extensive preparation, students in this class will travel to Montreal to observe part of the process of real negotiations between representatives from these two countries over the shared water resource of the Indus Basin. They will get a chance to interact with these leaders from both countries as well as water experts from around the world and Canadian students from the Dawson Center for Peace.
