Course Description

Summary

This class will examine the current diplomacy and process of a new Convention for the United Nations on Conserving the River Deltas. We will hear from some of the lead partners on the project: The Transboundary Water In-Cooperation Network (TWIN), co-founded by CAPA and the Institute for Environmental Diplomacy and Security at the University of Vermont, and the African Centre for Climate Action and Rural Development (ACCARD) directed by Freeman Oluohor. There are three environmental Conventions of the United Nations, the Conference of Parties on the Climate is the most well known that meets every year. We will examine how a Convention moves forward, how cooperation occurs between nations and how TWIN and ACCARD contribute as facilitators. We will also bring in Living Deltas out of England, and Meta Deltas out of China, as well as water scientists working in the Mississippi River Delta in Louisiana. We will examine the current populations, biodiversity and deforestation in the Mekong, Congo, Jordan, Amazon, Nile, Niger and Indus River Basins.
