Summary

This course will explore the potential of clay as an expressive medium, outside of standard ceramic practices. Let’s do all the things you aren’t supposed to do with clay! Students will cultivate an experimental approach as the guiding principle during their investigations. Alternative material use and its outcomes will inform our ideas – students should expect to mix a variety of materials into clay, dig clay from local deposits, use clay in its raw form without firing it, learn how clay responds to a range of environments, and more. There will be some failures, and many successes… and discussion about how we evaluate the outcomes. Experimental firing and alternative glazes will also be investigated. Projects completed during the semester will collectively inform the class, and students will work individually or in small groups to design and implement a final project based on the semester’s research. Documentation and sketchbook practices will be important during this course, for both record keeping and developing ideas.
