Course Description

Summary

We will address the process of discerning a text’s dramatic potential and realizing that potential in performance by developing and implementing a directorial approach through analysis and rehearsal techniques. The term is divided between exercises and rehearsal of individual projects. The work of the course will culminate in a director’s approach essay, a rehearsal log, and a public performance of student-directed scenes. Students are encouraged to explore cultural, ethnic, race, and gender diversity in choosing their final projects, which are subject to instructor’s approval.

Prerequisites

Directing I (DRA4332), plus at least two courses from a combination of the following: a) design, b) stage management, or c) play analysis / playwriting. Please email instructor (kjackson2@bennington.edu) about your interest prior to May 10, 2023.

Corequisites

Must attend auditions that will most likely occur on THU FRI evening of the first week of the term, 9/7 8.
