Course Description

Summary

Portable Nature is a collaborative course between students from ¿ÐýÃŹÙÍø College and students from the school of Art, Media + Technology at Parsons School of Design. It begins with the notion that nature is a constantly evolving and negotiated experience between humans and their environments. What we consider to be ‘natural’ is cultural, simultaneously managed and imagined. The pairing of ¿ÐýÃŹÙÍø and New York City presents two distinct environments—neither more natural than the other. This course expands on this idea to explore how certain characteristics of an environment can be transported to and cared for by someone from a different place. Through observation, digital and analog record-keeping, small design interventions, and the creation of objects and digital spaces, students will assess which parts of their respective locations (and lives) can become portable and learn more about those parts that can not.
