Course Description
Summary
This class, “The Phenomenal State of Permeability” (as coined by Margit Galanter), is a practice of engaging with the senses -- vision, touch, sound, and smell -- to compose movement, objects and space. ‘Warming ups’ will be offered followed by verbal “calls” and “scores” — primarily sourced, but not limited to, Lisa Nelson’s Tuning Scores—as a way of measuring, revealing, and communicating one’s attention and desires to ‘compose in real time’ within a group. Classes culminate in improvised group dances, with possibilities of wild dancing, absolute stillness, singing-shouting-reciting poetry, objects dancing, music making, and deep listening. We begin in the dance studio, but eventually expand beyond classroom walls to other locations around campus. ALL people are unique dancing beings! No prior dance training is required, however, the ability to stay present, curious, and active within a group composition is a must. This class is for dancers, painters, musicians, architects, activists, neuroscientists, computer programmers, farmers, puppeteers, and composers. “Tuning Scores evolved to offer tools of play—live actions and verbal calls—to investigate fundamental elements of performance, dance behavior, observation...in which we communicate our desires, our imagination, and our memory in a shared image space.” -Lisa NelsonCorequisites
