Summary
Since the beginning of the 20th century, collage has existed as a vehicle for the most diverse ideas and political concerns of the times. Collage is not simply a method of assembly, a way to bring unrelated fragments into new contexts, but a way of thinking that reflects revolution of all kinds. From Victorian women’s photo albums, to Picasso, to Hannah Hoch and more recently Mark Bradford and Tschabalala Self among many other artists, collage argues that the visual world is always in motion, even when it is still. This drawing course makes use of traditional media and skills in drawing in combination with found materials and texts. To succeed in this course students should be curious, willing, and open to chance, change, abstraction, and difference. Every class session will be spent making and discussing, and there is a significant amount of outside of class work expected. Goals of the course include development of a sophisticated understanding of the language and histories of collage, the consumption of practical knowledge about making collages, and the finding of an individual voice within each student’s body of work.
