Course Description
Summary
Their films, their books, their work, their lives have marked and shaped other lives, and still do. This course will focus on selected works of French women creators – authors, choreographers, stand-up comedians, scholars, etc. We will explore a variety of genres and forms of expressions. Readings include excerpts from Histoire de ma vie (George Sand, 1855), Le deuxième sexe (Simone de Beauvoir, 1949), and La discrétion (Guène 2021). Moreover, course materials include a performance, Les Indes galantes (Dembélé, 2020), and a documentary, Nous (Diop, 2021). Students will also learn from their live discussions with Maboula Soumahoro, creator of the Black History Month/Journées Africana in France, and Mame-Fatou Niang whose documentary, Mariannes noires (2017) presents several of the “créatrices” studied in this course. Written assignments and oral presentations will help students improve their reading, speaking and writing skills in French. Advanced level. Conducted in French.Corequisites
