Course Description

Summary

The craft of acting will be the main focus of this beginning class. Through physical and vocal warm-up exercises, sensory exploration, improvisation, scene work, and extensive reading students will be asked to develop an awareness of their own unique instrument as actors. Students will develop an understanding of the fundamentals of performance; using their body, voice, and imagination as instruments for creating drama, conflict, action, and story. Extensive out-of-class preparation of specific exercises, as well as rehearsals with scene partners, will constitute the bulk of expected work. In addition, students will read several plays throughout the term, as well as weekly theater theory readings. The writings, exercises, and work of such theater artists as Anne Bogart, Veenapani Chawla, Sharrell D. Luckett, Tadashi Suzuki, Ernie McClintock, Constantin Stanislavski, Sanford Meisner, Uta Hagen, Jerzy Grotowski among others will be researched and discussed in class. All casting and scene selection decisions will be discussed with each individual student in an effort to allow them to bring themselves fully to the work. Every effort will be made to provide an accurate and adequate ethnocultural context for the plays chosen.
