Course Description
Summary
This course invites students to explore a range of writings on the photograph from the 19th, 20th, and current century. Readings will be shared by literary and cultural critics, artists, scholars including Lady Eastlake, Charles Baudelaire, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, John Berger, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, bell hooks, T.J. Demos, and Mark Sealy. Students will engage with the essays in multiple ways, either individually or collaboratively, in discussion groups, always with the option of creating work that visually responds to the ideas embedded within them.
This course will involve meeting synchronously and asynchronously each session. This means that the class will be meeting together for class discussions and sharing work, as well as students working autonomously on their own time: individually, in small groups, and in one-on-one meetings with the instructor. While the course is listed within the 1:40-5:20 block, please note that the last two hours will be designated as asynchronous work time, meaning that our group meetings will begin at 1:40 and run through 3:20 on Mondays and Thursdays.
