Course Description
Summary
This production course introduces students to the fundamentals of working in video and the language of film form. Because of the unique circumstances this term, this iteration of Introduction to Video will be open to a larger number of students, who will then be broken up into smaller "production crews." Each crew will be required to attend a technical intensive, during which they will be issued with and instructed on how to use introductory equipment kits. Students will work with their crew to complete exercises exploring dimensions of cinematography, mise-en-scène, lighting, and sound design. Meanwhile, individual assignments will introduce them to the basics of editing. A range of screenings will encourage formal experimentation by drawing on the energy, intensity and criticality of avant-garde film and contemporary video art practices. Final, self-directed projects will serve as the culmination of the course. Please note that if we are unable to access College equipment and facilities during the second seven weeks of term, this course may be substituted by an Introduction to Video (Appropriation and Archival) course, which will focus primarily on creating projects with existing and archival footage, emphasizing post-production rather than production skills. In that case, we will offer a production intensive in a later term.
