Course Description

Summary

This course offers students the opportunity to develop their creative vision and technical skills in photography through experimentation, revision, and refinement. Inspired by their own curiosity and concerns, students will generate work each week, and will push themselves to explore multiple approaches and techniques. Assignments will include open ended prompts as well as exercises in constraint and repetition. Students are expected to enter the course with a high level of motivation and an open mind, and by the end of term to produce a produce a body of work that demonstrates sustained inquiry and engagement. Class time will include student critiques and the viewing and discussion of a broad range of photographic projects by contemporary and historical artists. Although this course is primarily geared toward the making of visual work, some reading, research, and short writing assignments will also be required. Students are welcome to use their own cameras (digital or analog), and will also be introduced to the range of equipment available to borrow. Expenses will vary depending on the nature of individual projects and may include: paper, film, and/ or digital storage, as well as various developing, printing, and fabrication services, etc. It is expected that students attend all Visual Arts Lecture Series events. Although they are not required to enroll in the VALS 1 credit course, it is recommended. Corequisites: Students are required to attend the Visual Arts Lecture Series.
