Summary

Poetry by Korean American female and feminist writers has burgeoned in the 21st century with a new generation of poets contributing to life of American letters. Reading poets such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Myung Mi Kim, Monica Youn, Don Mee Choi, Arlene Kim, EJ Koh, Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello, Hannah Sanghee Park, and Franny Choi, we will discuss how each writer negotiates representations of racial and ethnic identity and their intersections with gender, feminist, and other political concerns, as well as the choices each poet has made regarding poetic form and style. We will also consider the role that organizations such as Kundiman and the Asian American Writers’ Workshop have played in supporting the careers of young poets. You will write two critical essays and interview one of our poets for a literary journal or forum. Corequisites: All students are required to attend readings and events on literature night, typically held every other Wednesday at 7pm.
