Course System Home Terms Fall 2017 The Language of Persuasion

Course Description

Summary

Students with little or no background in Spanish will learn the language through an immersion in the study of political propaganda, tourist campaigns, and advertising from the Spanish-speaking world. An examination of Spanish and Latin American print, radio, film, and television advertisements, as well as political cartoons and speeches, will allow students to consider critically the truths, half-truths, and downright lies about the people and cultures that these media depict and target. In the process of observing and discussing such media, the course will introduce the material traditionally associated with introductory language courses: grammar, vocabulary, spoken and written practice, and reading and listening activities. As a result, in conjunction with learning about the cultures of Spain and Latin America and the concept of persuasion, students will understand increasingly sophisticated textual input and be able to express themselves in increasingly complex scenarios. Introductory level. Conducted in Spanish. Corequisites: Attendance at two Language Series events
