Painting the Extended Field

Course Description

Summary

This course takes its name from a pivotal painting exhibition held in Sweden in 1997.  In this show, the curators attempted to question the parameters of Painting, and to track “Painterly” qualities in other media.  Since at least the mid-20th Century, artists have experimented with an elastic definition of painting -- as a form that can be sculptural, performative, site-specific and even temporal.  Through readings, critiques and field trips, we’ll consider diverse painterly approaches to material, content and site.  Assignments will sharpen the relationship between intention and form, and provide an opportunity for diverse exploration in material applications. Students are invited to use a wide range of materials - including artist’s paints, house paint, building and craft supplies, found materials, fabrics, etc.  The course will culminate in an exhibition that participants will plan and execute collaboratively.
