Course System Home Terms Fall 2016 From Mary Wollstonecraft to Rachel Zucker: Toward a Postmodern Matriarchy

Course Description

Summary

As the 21st century awakens to the human rights issues within childbearing and rearing, Wollstonecraft and Zucker can serve as illuminating bookends.  From the Vindication of The Rights of Women to Home/Birth: A Poemic, poetry and prose will help guide our understanding of an essential movement toward a politically and spiritually evolved biological feminism.  We’ll examine the Fence Books anthology Not For Mothers Only, Rich’s Of Woman Born, Diving Into The Wreck, and The Will to Change, Shelley's Frankenstein, Gilman's Yellow Wallpaper, Leonard Shlain's Alphabet Versus The Goddess,  Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Chopin's Awakening, Firestone's Airless Spaces, Zucker’s Home/Birth and Mother(s), as well as inquire into the as-yet-written literature of assisted reproductive technology and gender fluidity, looking for ways to contextualize and complicate our beliefs and opinions about existence within these particular bodies.
