Summary

The last few decades have seen tremendous growth in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in almost all parts of the world, and in almost all realms of human interest. Today, NGOs are a highly visible (and consequently a highly criticized) component of civil society, and are major players in the broad fields of environmental protection and social justice at local, national and international levels. Students will consider the strengths and weaknesses of NGO-based solutions, analyze existing NGOs and design their own. Over the course of the term we will go through the process of identifying social needs, performing field research and applying needs-based design principles to develop high-impact NGOs from the ground up. Students may use the workshop to develop a hypothetical NGO, or to get a real organization off the ground. Models ranging from not-for-profits to social enterprises will be explored. Practical tools including grant writing, fundraising case statements and organizational structures will be applied. This workshop will culminate with a formal funding pitch to a panel of NGO practitioners.
