Course Description

Summary

This course will approach the subject of harmony from a jazz perspective. Participants will learn about chord structures and inversions, scales and modes used in improvisation, plus common (and uncommon) chord progressions. Participants will also learn how to identify chord symbols used in lead sheets and how to make practical use of one’s knowledge of key signatures when playing music with others. The class will also study works of composers in jazz such as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, and many more. The ability to read musical notation is required, as is the ability to use a chordal instrument (piano, guitar, etc.) as a tool to find scales, chords, and to understand written examples.
