Course Description

Summary

This course examines the history and aesthetics of the theater, including the development of staging, production, and acting methods and styles. In the fall of 2014 we will read representative plays from Ancient Greece through seventeenth-century Restoration England. Along with the plays, we'll look at critical and theoretical essays that elucidate the historical context and dramatic conventions of these works. Students will take midterm and final exams and write one essay.
