Course Description

Summary

This seven-week course is an introduction to the archive and how it has been central to artistic production of the 20th and 21st centuries. We will read Walter Benjamins Archive, Archive Fever: Uses of The Document in Contemporary Art, and conclude with The Big Archive. There will be lectures on how the archive exists in specific artists works. Students will be given short research assignments that will allow them to conclude the seminar with presentations of their own. This course will be offered the first seven weeks of term.
